Volunteer with HRC Greater Washington DC
Volunteers are the backbone of HRC, and our volunteers work on the front lines in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality. HRC invests in our volunteers through leadership development and recognition programs, offering workshops, conferences, online resources and support from staff to ensure that our leaders become the strongest and most effective advocates, leaders and fundraisers they can be.
Our volunteer force in the DMV is centered from our local Steering Committee, which engages individuals locally in the fight for equality. HRC Greater Washington DC’s powerful network of all-volunteer communities is made up of people from a wide array of backgrounds, experiences, identities, and skill sets. In addition to educating the public about the issues that affect LGBTQ+people and their families, our Steering Committee works to build strong relationships with local businesses and like-minded organizations, raise money to fund our work and turn out voters to elect pro-Equality candidates into office (Click on the program areas to learn more about the work.)
Steering Committee Program Areas (Subcommittees)
- Recruit, train, and engage with local HRC volunteers
- Help match volunteers to their areas of interest and ensure all volunteers have a rewarding experience
- Communicate with local members and supporters and promote local events and actions
- Manage Steering Committee’s social media, email programs, etc.
- Recruit, maintain and grow the HRC general membership in the local area
- Plan and execute local Pride events across the region
- Host social membership appreciation events (e.g. holiday party, bowling night, watch parties, etc)
- Organize outreach at other community events to recruit and engage members
- Recruit members to the Federal Club and Federal Club Council, HRC’s major donor program and key source of funding with pledge levels starting from $1,200
- Plan and manage Federal Club events with political and social focus
- Help local Federal Club members stay engaged with HRC
- Build partnerships with local community organizations: (Diversity, Religious, Families/ Youth, Transgender, Women, Immigration, Health/Wellness., etc)
- Work with HRC’s political field staff in grassroots programs, lobbying and campaign/election activities
- Help mobilize supporters for public activism and resistance
- Secure sponsorships from local businesses and organizations for Greater Washington DC Steering Committee events and initiatives
- Conduct outreach to the local business community to engage with HRC and support our work
- Partner with local Employee Resource Groups to increase awareness of HRR and provide opportunities to volunteer and get involved
- Oversee all aspects of National Dinner in partnership with HRC events staff
- Organize phone banks, walk-abouts and other community outreach for the Dinner’s Silent Auction, Program Book and Raffle
- High events management focus
- Largest fundraising event in the country for HRC
